Hi, my name is Sherrie Rucker.

I grew up in North Philadelphia and currently hold a Master’s degree in Social Work. I teach Autistic Support for grades K–2 in the School District of Philadelphia. Before I began my teaching journey, I was a Grief Clinician, leading grief groups in schools all across the city. Prior to that, I worked as a Behavioral Health Technician (BHT), supporting children with disabilities.

My autism mom journey began when my son was two and a half years old. We started noticing regression in his speech, motor, and cognitive abilities. We enrolled him in early intervention, where he received speech therapy, occupational therapy, and special instruction (also known as play therapy). He was officially diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder at age three, and since then, it’s been a journey of nonstop education, advocacy, and growth for everyone involved.

Being an autism mom, a current special education teacher, and a former behavior technician has given me a unique and powerful perspective on what it’s like to immerse yourself in the world children with autism.

I know what it’s like to advocate for your child every day.

I want to collaborate with teachers, administration, case managers, and therapists to create the best possible space for children on the spectrum, no matter their setting.

That’s why I’m here.

I know what it’s like being afraid to send my son to an educational settings not knowing how, or if he’d fit in. I want to help ease that weight for others. I’ve gathered so much information over the years, and my biggest goal is to share it. I want early childhood educators across the city to feel confident that they can support ALL children, and I want parents to feel like their children on the spectrum are seen, heard, and safe!
